Precautions

The following precautions should be observed and discussed with your physician before using Kwellada-P Lotion.

  1. Allergies - Tell your physician if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Kwellada or its generic equivalent Lindane. Other allergies, such as those to preservatives or dyes, should also be discussed.


  2. Pregnancy - Kwellada has not been formally tested on pregnant women. Lindane, the generic equivalent of this drug, is absorbed through the skin of pregnant women and may cause toxic effects in the central nervous system of the unborn baby. You should discuss the risks of using this product with your doctor if you are pregnant. If your physician does recommend that you use Kwellada, follow his/her directions strictly concerning dosage and usage. Lindane has been shown to cause birth defects and other problems in the offspring of preganant animals.


  3. Breast Feeding - This medication is absorbed through the skin and will be present in the breast milk. Kwellada may cause serious health problems for the baby if s/he ingests the contaminated milk or through direct contact with the mother's skin during use of this medication. Breast feeding should be temporarily halted whille using Kwellada and the breast milk should be expressed and thrown away for at least 24 hours following treatment with this medicine. This should be discussed with your doctor before using Kwellada.


  4. Children - Infants, children, and adults weighing under 110 pounds are very sensitive to the harmful side effects of this medication. Be sure to discuss this with your physician. Kwellada should never be used on premature infants.


  5. Older Adults - The elderly and adults weighing under 110 pounds are very sensitive to the harmful side effects of this medication. Be sure to discuss this with your physician.


  6. Other Medications - It is extremely important that your physician know if you are using ANY prescription or nonprescription (OTC) medications. These medications include but are not limited to:


  7. Antidepressants
    Antipsychotics
    Anticholinesterases
    Choloroquine
    Cyclosporine
    Imipenem
    Isoniazid
    Meperidine
    Methocarbamol
    Mycophenolate mofetil
    Penicillins
    Pyrimethamine
    Quinolone antibiotics
    Radiographic contrast agents
    Tacrolimus
    Theophylline - Medicines that help you breathe - These medicines can cause certain side effects when used at the same time as Kwellada and they should be used together very carefully.
    Skin, scalp, or hair preparations such as creams, lotions, ointments, or oil - Using these while using Kwellada may cause more of the medication to be absorbed through the skin


  8. Other Medical Problems - Be sure to tell your physician if you have any other medical conditions, as they may cause further probelms while using Kwellada. Some of these medical conditions include:


  9. Alcohol use that is excessive
    Brain Tumor
    Head injuries, or a history of,
    HIV Infection
    Liver Disease
    Seizures, history of,
    If you suddenly stop the use of alcohol or sedatives - This condition may increase the risk of seizure.
    Hypersensitivity to Kwellada or its generic equivalent Lindane,
    Seizure disorder - Kwellada should not be used by these patients
    Skin Conditions - Patients with crusted scabies, atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis should not use this medication as these conditions may increas the amount of Kwellada absorbed into the body and cause serious side effects.

Kwellada-P Lotion Usage

Warnings

Kwellada is poisonous. Do not use it near the mouth as it may be extremely harmful, even fatal, if swallowed.

Only use Kwellada as directed by your doctor. Do not use more Kwellada, use more often, or for a longer period than advised by your physician. Doing so may increase the chance of absorption through the skin and increase the risk of lindane poisoning.

Do not allow Kwellada to get into your eyes. If this does happen, flush your eyes with water immediately and contact your physician.

Do not use on open sores or cuts on the skin. Doing so may increase the risk of lindane poisoning. If you are applying Kwellada to another person you should wear plastic disposable or rubber gloves made of vinyl or latex, especially if you are pregnant or breast feeding. You should not use natural latex gloves as the Kwellada can seep through those gloves and be absorbed by your skin. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the lotion. This will further prevent the lotion from being absorbed by your skin. Contact your doctor if you have any questions.

Do not cover the area completely, use light clothing.

Kwellada-P Lotion comes with instructions. Read these carefully before use. Consult your doctor if you have any questions.

Sexual partners or members of your family may also need to be treated as scabies are easily passed to others through close contact. If these people have not been checked for scabies, or if you have any questions about this, contact your physician.

Using Kellada-P Lotion treatment for scabies:
  1. If your skin has any lotion, cream, oil, or ointment on it, wash, rinse, and dry your skin thoroughly before applying Kwellada-P Lotion.
  2. If you take a warm bath or shower before using Kwellada-P Lotion, dry your skin thoroughly before application.
  3. Use enough Kwellada-P Lotion on your dry skin to cover the entire skin from neck down, inclding the soles of the feet, and rub in well.
  4. Put Kwellada-P Lotion under your fingernails and trim them short. You should use a toothbrush to get the lotion under your nails, throwing the toothbrush away when finished.
  5. Do not completely cover the skin, use light clothing.
  6. Leave Kwellada-P Lotion on for 8 to 12 hours, then remove remove by washing off the cream completely and throughly.


Dosage

Follow your doctor's instruction or the directions on the Kwellada-P Lotion box. The following is only an example of the most common dosage for Kwellada-P Lotion. If your dose differs from what is indicated below, do not change your dose unless otherwise instructed by your physician.

For Kwellada-P Lotion:
  • Adults and Children - Apply to the affected area(s) of the skin one time.
  • Premature Infants - Use is not recommended.


Storage

When storing this medicine:
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not store near heat or in direct light
  • Do not allow Kwellada-P Lotion to freeze
  • Do not keep any Kwellada-P Lotion that is outdated or is no longer needed. Be sure that discarded Kwellada-P Lotion is out of the reach of children.

Additional Treatment

To help prevent reinfestation and to decrease spread of insfestation to others:
  1. Mites can survive on nearly any type of surface for two to three days. Therefore, all areas must be vacuumed and washed thoroughly, including table tops, counters, linens, and toys.


  2. All recently worn clothing (including underwear, pajamas, and hats), used sheets, pillowcases, and towels should be washed in very hot water or dry-cleaned.


  3. Any difficult to clean items should be sealed in bags for a week.

Side Effects

Even though these undesirable effects may not occur, if they do, they will require immediate medical attention.

Rare Side Effects may include:
  • Convulsions (seizures)
  • dizziness, clumsiness, or unsteadiness
  • fast heartbeat
  • muscle cramps
  • nervousness, restlessness, or irritability
  • vomiting
  • skin irritation that was not present before using Kwellada-P Lotion
  • skin rash
After treatment with Kwellada-P Lotion, itching may occur and persist for 1 to several weeks. If the itching is present longer than this or becomes unbearable, consult your doctor.

People treated with the generic equivalent Lindane have experienced serious side effects. Some have occurred even when the medication is used properly according to the package directions. Serious side effects have been reproted after repeat or prolonged use, but also, in rare cases, after a single application. Be sure to discuss these possible side effects with your doctor.

Other side effects which have not been listed may occur in some people. If you experience any other effects from using this medication, please contact your physician immediately.
