Tips on Treatment for Scabies
and Head Lice |
An effective medication should
be included in your head lice
treatment or treatment for
scabies. In addition, the following steps are suggested
to help eliminate the current infestation from your living space
allowing you to finally end the outbreak!
Scabies
- Mites can survive on nearly any type of surface for two to three days. Therefore, all areas must be vacuumed and washed thoroughly, including table tops, counters, linens, and toys.
- All recently worn clothing (including underwear, pajamas, and hats), used sheets, pillowcases, and towels should be washed in very hot water or dry-cleaned.
- Any difficult to clean items should be sealed in bags for a week.
Head Lice
General Tips
- Check every member of your household for nits and lice. Be sure to treat every case of lice discovered in the household. Do not treat anyone who does not have nits or lice in their hair.
- Notify the child's school and/or day care provider that your child has lice.
Combing Tips
- Allow enough time for thorough combing. Depending on hair length, it could take nearly an hour to complete properly.
- Place a towel between the hair and shoulders of the person being treated.
- Separate the hair in to four sections using hair clips to secure them in place in preparation for combing.
- Start with a 1 inch square area of hair in first section and begin combing the hair from the scalp to the ends of the strands in one complete motion.
- Dip the comb in hot water and wipe clean with a paper towel after each comb through.
- If any nits remain on the strands, comb through again.
- Simply continue combing until all of the sections have been completed.
- Once completed, wash the clothing the treated person was wearing and the towel and comb used according to the directions below. Also wash your hands thoroughly.
Household Care
- All personal headgear, scarf's, coats, and bed linen should be disinfected by machine washing in hot water and drying, using the hot cycle of a dryer for at least 20 minutes.
- Personal articles of clothing or bedding that cannot be washed may be dry-cleaned, sealed in a plastic bag for a period of about 2 weeks, or sprayed with a product specifically designed for this purpose.
- Personal combs and brushes may be disinfected by soaking in hot water (above 130F) for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Thorough vacuuming of rooms inhabited by infected patients is recommended.
Prevention of Future Outbreaks
- Check your child's hair on a weekly basis for nits and lice
- Treat all cases immediately upon discovery of nits or lice
- Do not share clothing, towels, bedding, hats, combs, brushes, etc.
- Be sure to keep individual people's clothing and bedding separate while stored in dressers, closets, etc.
- Shower caps or liners can be used when children are required to share helmets/headgear.

Please Note: As with any
treatment for scabies, you may experience an increase in
certain scabies symptoms, such as itching and red bumps, for up
to 1 week after treatment. This is normal as the dead
scabies will cause irritation and will only leave the skin with
your natural skin shedding process.
