Lice Symptoms

The lice symptoms will vary based upon the type of lice.  However, the most common of the head lice symptoms is itching, which some children may not show in the early stages.  This itching is caused by an allergic reaction to lice saliva which is introduced when the lice bite to feed on the host's blood.  This itching usually starts around one week after infestation. Also, the lymph nodes in the neck and behind the ears may become swollen or tender.

Please Note: Scratching may cause the skin to become raw. This raw skin may begin to emit a clear fluid or become crusted and/or infected.

What may cause different symptoms?

  • For those who have never had lice before, it may take weeks, even months, for the person to begin itching or to notice that they have been experiencing increased itching in the infested area
  • People who have previously had lice may develop itching as quickly as in the first two days of infestation. This happens because the person has already developed a prior sensitivity to lice saliva.
  • Tolerance to lice saliva may differ from person to person. Some will be extremely sensitive to the infestation, while others may be able to develop a strong tolerance to the saliva over a period of time.
Can I see my lice?

The lice eggs, commonly referred to as nits, can be seen on the shafts of hair, though it is possible that you will need a magnifying glass. The lice eggs will appear to be a brownish color before hatching and a white or lighter brown after hatching. They are very tightly attached to the shaft of the hair and will not move up and down on the shaft.
